The beginnings of Chorus Lumír are reaching until 1864. In this year, within the scope of Czech emancipation endeavours typical for then regenerate tone, „Readers Slavic Club“ was established in Královo Pole, at that time village close to Brno. As the name prompt, the original pursuits were literary-singing activities with the main objective to maintain and develop Czech language and culture. In the following decades, the club as well as the whole Czech society passes trough a lot of transformations and changes. In 1907, the name Lumír appears for the first time in its title. Activities of „Literary-singing club Lumír“ are however soon affected by the First World War and the activity is revived only in 1919 under the direction of important Czech composer and professor Vítězslav Kaprál. At the autumn of 1921, Kaprál is replaced by the famous pianist and music scholar Ludvík Kundera. Kundera finished his very fruitful acting in Lumír by especially valuable and often quoted concert in commemoration of Ludwig van Beethoven in November 27th, 1926. But the war is coming again on scene, that is survived by the club under less „provocative“ name „Hlahol“. After the liberation the Chorus Lumír „Pěvecké sdružení Lumír“ is renewed as male Chorus with 45 members. In 1955 is Lumír awarded in the contest of peoples creativeness I. Price in field of mixed chorus. In 1960, the society loses its independence and is according to the decision of leading authorities incorporated to Works Trade Union club of Královopolská machine factory. Here, under the leading of various conductors, Lumír works exactly within the scope of socialist principles, for what is also awarded within the final concert of jubilee season State award „For the Credit of Build-up“.
Since the beginning of 80´s with the coming of young conductors also a gradual change of the Chorus starts. The average age of the members goes markedly downwards and the repertoire is also adjusted to this greening. The breakdown comes than after November 1989. The Chorus can for the first time show its qualities abroad. Lumír carries repetitional tours to Austria, Switzerland and Denmark. The Chorus enters into friendship with jazz big band from Norwegian Stavanger, wherewith Lumír performs common concerts in the Czech Republic as well as in Norway. It travels for performances to Italy and invites the Italian Chorus for common performances in the Czech Republic. It also takes part in the prestigious international competitive festival in Irish Sligo.
